Welcome back the smiles to the Padres' clubhouse as the two parties reunite.
Long time, no see! It has been reported that Jurickson Profar has recently agreed to a minor league deal to come back to San Diego... sort of.
Profar, 30, was just recently waived by the Colorado Rockies. As the Rockies look to rebuild and look for September call-ups, they decided it was best to let Profar go elsewhere to allow the young prospects a chance at playing time.
Profar and his family never wanted to leave America's Finest City. In hopes of staying with the Padres who exceeded 2022 expectations, it unfortunately did not come about. After opting out of his $7.75 million option with the Padres, it did not go as planned for the former free agent who signed the same deal with the Rockies last second.
Despite the Coors Effect, that did not result in much for Profar, as he posted a .236/.316/.364 slashline with eight homers in 111 games played.
What seems to be too little, too late for the 62-73 Padres, it is good to see a familiar face back who has represented themselves well with the Friars. To this newer roster, Profar, if called up soon, brings utility and versatility. A primary left fielder with above average defense who can also play the infield with numerous positions. Also, a switch hitter with great plate discipline. It is something the Padres can take back.
Profar was a major help for the lead-off hitter role in 2022. As Ha-seong Kim has done sensational work this season, it is great to have some options. Remember, depth is important and the Padres lack in that department.
Maybe Profar learned that money is not everything. Despite being a Boras client, it is hopeful that this brings a learning lesson to both sides. Could Profar now see the more important side of being a big contribution on and off the field? As for the Padres, could they learn from overspending and overcommitting? We will find out.
Despite the Padres being one of the most embarrassing teams of all time, maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Not the postseason, but bring back to what achieved greatness last season.
